US-China Trade Talks Resume in Seoul Ahead of Trump-Xi Summit
Trade negotiators led by Scott Bessent and He Lifeng met in Seoul on Wednesday to prepare for a high-stakes summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping later this week.
The talks focused on growing geopolitical and economic tensions, including the ongoing Iran conflict and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.
Washington has been urging Beijing to help stabilize the waterway and reduce reliance on Iranian crude imports, while also proposing a new “Board of Trade” mechanism to better manage future US-China commercial relations.
Despite the renewed diplomatic engagement, expectations for major breakthroughs remain limited as rivalry between the world’s two largest economies continues to intensify across trade, technology, energy, and regional security.
Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing will mark the first trip by a US president to China in nearly a decade. The delegation is expected to include top business leaders such as Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, highlighting the growing importance of AI, technology, and global supply chains in bilateral relations.
Meanwhile, South Korea is positioning itself as a key diplomatic player amid rising tensions between the US and China, while also seeking stronger regional stability and improved ties with Beijing.
The meeting is aimed at preparing for the upcoming summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, focusing on trade, geopolitical tensions, and global energy security.
The talks include the Iran war, stability in the Strait of Hormuz, bilateral trade relations, technology cooperation, and a proposed “Board of Trade” mechanism for managing economic ties.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil shipping route. Disruptions there have increased energy security concerns, especially for Asian economies heavily dependent on Middle East oil imports.
The US delegation is expected to include Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, highlighting the growing focus on AI, semiconductors, and technology partnerships.
South Korea is trying to position itself as a diplomatic bridge between the US and China while also protecting regional stability, trade interests, and energy security.
