SpaceX Seeks $40 Billion to Buy Nvidia Chips in Massive AI Financing Push
SpaceX is reportedly in talks to raise $40 billion in debt financing to purchase Nvidia AI chips, highlighting the enormous amount of capital now flowing into artificial-intelligence computing infrastructure. The financing is expected to be led by Apollo Global Management.
According to reports, SpaceX is considering a financing package consisting of approximately:
The transaction is expected to close in 2027, although talks remain at an early stage and could change or fail to materialize.
SpaceX is expanding beyond rockets and satellites into AI computing and data-center infrastructure. Elon Musk has said SpaceX plans to build its data centers exclusively around Nvidia technology, including its next-generation Vera Rubin architecture.
The move reflects the explosive demand for computing power as AI companies race to secure advanced GPUs and data-center capacity.
For Nvidia, a $40 billion SpaceX order would represent another enormous source of demand for its AI processors.
Nvidia is already working with major financial institutions—including Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR—on efforts designed to mobilize more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure financing.
The financing also highlights a growing concern across the AI industry: who ultimately pays for the massive cost of AI infrastructure?
SpaceX already has substantial capital requirements, and its previously issued bonds came under pressure as investors questioned its heavy spending and debt levels. SpaceX has an investment-grade BBB rating, allowing a wider range of institutional investors to participate in its debt.
The SpaceX proposal is part of a much larger trend:
AI Demand ↑ → GPU Demand ↑ → Data Centers ↑ → Capital Requirements ↑ → Debt Financing ↑
Reuters reported that AI infrastructure could require enormous amounts of external financing in the coming years, with Morgan Stanley estimating $1.5 trillion of financing needs by 2028.
SpaceX's potential $40 billion Nvidia-chip financing shows how aggressively Elon Musk is building AI infrastructure—and how deeply Wall Street is becoming involved in funding the AI boom.
For investors, the key question is no longer simply “Who is buying Nvidia chips?” but “Can the revenue generated by these massive AI investments justify the debt used to finance them?”
