OpenAI Defeats Musk Lawsuit as AI Governance Debate Intensifies
A U.S. jury ruled in favor of OpenAI on Monday in a closely watched lawsuit filed by Elon Musk, who accused the company of abandoning its original nonprofit mission to develop artificial intelligence for humanity’s benefit.
The court in Oakland determined that Musk filed the case after the legal deadline had expired, meaning the jury did not rule directly on whether OpenAI violated its founding principles. Musk quickly responded on X, announcing plans to appeal the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court.
Musk argued that OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman transformed the organization into a profit-focused company after initially presenting it as a nonprofit AI initiative. He also alleged that Microsoft knowingly backed OpenAI’s commercial direction. OpenAI countered that Musk’s claims were financially motivated and filed too late to be legally valid.
The trial lasted 11 days and became one of the most significant legal battles in the AI industry so far, raising broader questions about AI safety, corporate influence, and who should financially benefit from advanced artificial intelligence systems.
Musk was one of OpenAI’s original founders in 2015 and reportedly contributed $38 million before leaving the board in 2018. The dispute now reflects a larger divide within the tech world over whether AI should remain an open public-interest technology or evolve into a highly profitable commercial industry.
