Liquid Network Hit by $320 Million Bitcoin Exploit as 4,000 BTC Drained
The Bitcoin-based Liquid Network has suffered a major security incident after roughly 4,000 BTC, worth about $320 million, was withdrawn from its federation wallet. The withdrawal represented around 95% of the roughly 4,200 BTC held before the incident.
Liquid halted new transactions and exchanges suspended LBTC deposits and withdrawals while Blockstream investigated the incident. The network said the withdrawal was processed through SideSwap, but the relevant authorization key itself was not compromised.
The attackers described themselves as white-hat hackers and left an on-chain message asking Liquid to contact them. This has created uncertainty over whether the funds were stolen permanently or taken as part of an attempted security intervention.
In the latest development, 3,400 BTC—roughly $270 million—was returned to the federation wallet after Liquid/Blockstream patched the affected bridge infrastructure. About 600 BTC, worth roughly $47 million, remained outstanding at the time of reporting.
Liquid is designed to provide faster Bitcoin settlement for exchanges and other market participants. A loss of this scale raises questions about bridge security, reserve management and the risks surrounding wrapped/pegged Bitcoin assets such as LBTC.
$320M drained → Network paused → Vulnerability patched → $270M returned → ~$47M still unresolved
BTC: Watch for any market reaction to the remaining unrecovered coins.
LBTC: Monitor whether the 1:1 Bitcoin backing remains fully restored.
Liquid Network: Watch for the resumption of deposits, withdrawals and normal operations.
Security: The technical root cause and the safeguards added after the exploit will be crucial.
This is more than a large crypto theft story. It is a major test of confidence in Bitcoin sidechains and custodial/bridge infrastructure.
The positive development is that most of the drained Bitcoin has already been recovered. But until the remaining funds are resolved and the network fully resumes, security and trust remain the biggest concerns.
