A satirical political movement called the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has exploded across Indian social media, turning into a powerful symbol of growing Gen Z frustration over unemployment, political disconnect, and economic pressure in the world’s most-populous nation.
Launched only days ago, the mock party has already amassed nearly 20 million Instagram followers, surpassing the online popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on the platform.
The movement emerged after India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant allegedly referred to unemployed youth as “parasites” and “cockroaches” during a court hearing — comments that triggered widespread backlash online. Although the judge later clarified he had been misquoted, the controversy ignited a viral wave of memes, satire, and political criticism.
The CJP describes itself as:
“India’s most honest political party for the lazy, unemployed and forgotten citizens.”
Its manifesto humorously embraces resume gaps, unemployment, and burnout, while sharply criticizing what many young Indians see as a broken job market and an out-of-touch political system.
Despite India remaining one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, millions of young people continue struggling to secure stable jobs.
According to research from Azim Premji University:
Political analysts say the viral rise of the Cockroach Janta Party reflects a deeper generational shift rather than just internet humor.
“This shows a deepening frustration with the politics and society young people inhabit,” said political analyst Zaad Mahmood.
The movement resonates strongly with India’s digital-first generation, many of whom feel politically unrepresented despite making up the majority of the population.
Around 65% of India’s population is under 35, yet many top political leaders remain decades older. Prime Minister Modi is currently 75 years old.
One 25-year-old supporter said she turned to Instagram content creation after struggling to find career opportunities, adding:
“The youth is tired of living in an environment already decided for them.”
Observers note the rise of youth-driven online activism mirrors broader anti-establishment movements seen recently across South Asia, including protests in Nepal and Bangladesh fueled by unemployment and corruption concerns.
Interestingly, the founder of the movement, Abhijeet Dipke — reportedly a former member of the Aam Aadmi Party — launched the project while reportedly searching for work after graduating from Boston University.
Even opposition leaders have acknowledged the movement’s significance. Shashi Tharoor from India’s Congress Party called it a sign that young voters are demanding change.
The Cockroach Janta Party is a satirical political movement that went viral across India’s social media platforms. It represents frustration among young Indians over unemployment, political disconnect, and economic struggles.
The movement gained momentum after controversial remarks linked to India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant sparked backlash online. Many young people connected with the party’s humor and criticism of the job market.
Its main focus is India’s youth unemployment crisis, especially among college graduates struggling to find stable jobs despite the country’s fast-growing economy.
Currently, it is more of a social media-driven satirical movement rather than an officially recognized political party. However, its popularity has started influencing political discussions nationwide.
Many Gen Z voters feel unrepresented by traditional politics and frustrated by limited career opportunities, rising competition, and economic uncertainty. The movement’s humor and relatable messaging strongly resonate with them.
