Gold Edges Higher as Softer Dollar Supports Prices; Investors Assess Fed Rate Outlook
Gold prices edged higher as a softer U.S. dollar provided support, while investors assessed the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook and its implications for inflation, bond yields and precious metals.
The dollar’s weakness made gold more affordable for buyers using other currencies, helping support demand. However, uncertainty over the Fed’s next policy move limited confidence in a sustained rally.
1. A weaker U.S. dollar
Gold is priced internationally in dollars. When the dollar declines, gold generally becomes less expensive for overseas buyers, potentially increasing demand.
2. Federal Reserve rate expectations
Investors are monitoring economic data and Fed officials’ comments for clues about whether interest rates could remain elevated or move lower. Lower rates tend to support non-yielding assets such as gold, while expectations of higher rates can create pressure.
3. Treasury yields and inflation
U.S. Treasury yields and inflation-adjusted real yields remain important drivers. Rising real yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, while falling yields can make the metal more attractive.
4. Safe-haven demand
Economic uncertainty and geopolitical risks can also support gold as investors seek assets perceived as stores of value.
According to Reuters, at 03:47 GMT on October 20, spot gold was up 0.1% at $4,145.22 per ounce, while U.S. December gold futures rose 0.1% to $4,164.70.
The market remains sensitive to the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting on October 27–28. Traders are also watching oil-driven inflation risks and the next U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report.

A softer U.S. dollar is supporting gold by making it cheaper for international buyers. Expectations about the Fed’s future interest-rate decisions are also influencing prices.
Gold does not pay interest. Higher rates can make interest-bearing assets more attractive, putting pressure on gold, while lower-rate expectations can support demand
Yes. Rising Treasury yields, persistent inflation and expectations of further Fed rate hikes can outweigh dollar weakness and push gold lower.
Traders should monitor the Fed’s October 27–28 meeting, upcoming PCE inflation data, the U.S. dollar index, Treasury yields and geopolitical developments. These factors could increase volatility in XAUUSD.
