Dow Surges 1,500 Points in Best Single-Day Rally Since April 2025 as Democrats Secure Clear Victory and Oil Prices Fall
U.S. stocks surged on Wednesday after Democrats secured a decisive victory in the midterm elections, reducing political uncertainty and improving investor sentiment. President Donald Trump’s acceptance of the election results further reassured markets, easing concerns about potential political instability.
Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, alongside significant victories in key gubernatorial races, including Texas. The shift in political power is expected to create greater congressional oversight of Trump’s policies, including business-friendly tax cuts, tariffs, and the administration’s approach to the Iran conflict, which has contributed to inflationary pressures.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1,569.40 points, or 3.03%, closing at 53,356.12. This marked its strongest single-day performance since April 9, 2025, and pushed the index above the 53,000 level for the first time since September 8. The S&P 500 gained 1.58% to close at 7,688.62, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.44% to 25,736.51.
The rally gathered further momentum after U.S. crude oil prices plunged more than 8%. Brent crude futures also declined by over 8%, following comments from Vice President JD Vance, who linked the Republican Party’s election setbacks partly to the ongoing Iran conflict.
President Trump also signalled his willingness to accept the election outcome and indicated that Republicans would work with Democrats, helping ease concerns about political confrontation and policy uncertainty.
Stocks associated with broader economic activity led the rally. Walmart shares climbed approximately 3%, while Bank of America gained around 4%, reflecting renewed investor interest in sectors beyond technology.
However, technology and artificial intelligence-related stocks experienced some pressure. Before the election, investors had expressed concerns that a Democratic victory could bring tighter regulations on data centres and the broader AI infrastructure industry. Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa's proposal for an immediate moratorium on new data centre developments added to those concerns.
CoreWeave and SpaceX-linked shares declined, while Nvidia fell approximately 3% during the session.
Despite the pressure on certain technology stocks, overall market sentiment remained positive. Historical market trends also suggest that Wall Street has often performed well under a divided government, as political gridlock can limit major policy changes and provide businesses with a more predictable operating environment.
