Asian Stocks Slide as US Tech Sell-Off Spreads; Chinese Yuan Weakens
November 3, 2026 | Asian Markets | Technology | Currencies
Asian stock markets came under pressure on Tuesday as renewed weakness in U.S. technology shares triggered selling across major regional markets. Concerns over expensive AI investments, semiconductor valuations and slowing confidence in technology earnings weighed on investor sentiment, while the Chinese yuan weakened against the U.S. dollar.
The decline reflected growing uncertainty about whether the massive investments in artificial intelligence can deliver sustainable profits. Investors were also cautious ahead of the U.S. midterm elections and important policy announcements.
The MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan fell around 1.4%, with South Korea, Taiwan and China among the weakest markets.
South Korea: Shares fell as much as 4.1%, reflecting pressure on technology and semiconductor stocks.
Taiwan: The benchmark market declined around 3.3%, as chip-sector weakness weighed on sentiment.
China: Stocks lost approximately 1.4% amid concerns about technology valuations and currency movements.
Australia: Shares advanced around 0.3%, showing that market weakness was not uniform across the region.
The Chinese yuan weakened after the People's Bank of China announced a measure to slow its recent appreciation.
The central bank said it would raise the foreign-exchange deposit reserve ratio for financial institutions from 4% to 6%, effective November 15. The move tightens the availability of foreign-currency liquidity and is intended to moderate the yuan's rapid gains.
The U.S. dollar rose approximately 0.3% against the offshore yuan to around 6.6645.
A weaker yuan can help Chinese exporters remain competitive internationally, but it may also increase the cost of imported commodities and create additional uncertainty for currency investors.
Wall Street's technology sector also struggled, with Apple shares falling 2.8% in after-hours trading after its outlook indicated pressure on holiday-quarter profit margins and weaker-than-expected growth in services revenue.
Investors are increasingly questioning whether the enormous spending on AI infrastructure will generate sufficient returns. This concern is putting pressure on semiconductor companies and other high-valuation technology stocks.
U.S. Treasury yields: The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to approximately 4.913%, keeping financial conditions in focus.
Oil prices: Brent crude recovered slightly to around $105.30 per barrel after falling more than 7% in the previous session.
U.S. dollar: The dollar strengthened against the offshore yuan.
U.S. politics: Investors are monitoring the midterm elections for potential implications for economic policy, taxation and government spending.
The latest market weakness highlights three major risks:
Technology valuations: Expensive AI and semiconductor stocks could remain vulnerable if earnings fail to justify expectations.
Currency volatility: China's efforts to manage yuan appreciation could influence Asian currencies and international capital flows.
Interest-rate uncertainty: Higher Treasury yields may put additional pressure on growth stocks and emerging markets.

Asian markets are declining mainly because of weakness in U.S. technology stocks, concerns about AI investment returns and selling pressure in semiconductor companies.
The People's Bank of China announced an increase in the foreign-exchange deposit reserve ratio from 4% to 6%, aiming to slow the yuan's rapid appreciation against the dollar
A weaker yuan can support Chinese exporters by making their products more competitive. However, it can increase import costs, influence regional currencies and create uncertainty for international investors.
Technology companies are investing heavily in data centers, chips and computing infrastructure. Investors want evidence that these investments will generate sustainable revenue, profits and cash flow.
Investors should monitor U.S. technology earnings, semiconductor demand, Chinese currency policy, Treasury yields, U.S. midterm election results and geopolitical developments
