Apple Unveils iPhone Duo as New CEO John Ternus Begins a New Era
Apple has opened a new chapter under CEO John Ternus, unveiling the company’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, in a major product launch that pushes Apple deeper into premium smartphones and AI-powered devices.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone, featuring a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display. It starts at $1,999, making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone, with storage options reaching up to 2TB.
Apple is positioning the Duo as more than a conventional phone, emphasizing multitasking, a tablet-like experience, Apple Pencil support and AI applications.
The launch marks John Ternus’s first major Apple product event as CEO after succeeding Tim Cook on September 1.
His first major presentation sends a clear message: Apple is entering a new product cycle while maintaining its focus on premium hardware, ecosystem integration and AI.
One important correction to the headline: the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, not the N1 chip. The A20 Pro is Apple's new 2-nanometer smartphone processor, designed to improve performance, efficiency and AI capabilities.
The N1 is Apple's in-house networking chip, introduced with the previous iPhone generation, supporting technologies such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
Beyond the foldable design, Apple is under pressure to demonstrate that it can compete more effectively in the AI race.
The company highlighted privacy-focused AI, including greater on-device processing and improvements to Siri. For Ternus, turning Apple's huge installed base into an AI-driven upgrade cycle could be one of his biggest challenges.
The Duo gives Apple a potential new premium revenue stream, but the $1,999 starting price could limit mass-market adoption. Analysts expect strong initial interest from Apple loyalists, while foldables remain a relatively small portion of the global smartphone market.
