AI Boom Reshapes Software Industry, Expands Market Rather Than Replacing It
Bernstein Research argues that the rise of generative AI is not undermining the software industry but instead expanding its long-term growth potential. While Wall Street continues to debate the disruption caused by AI automation, the firm sees a fundamental widening of the total addressable market rather than structural decline.
The report highlights that the biggest beneficiaries of this shift are the foundational layers of the technology stack, particularly Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Demand for compute resources—ranging from GPUs to CPUs—is expected to accelerate as AI workloads scale across enterprises.
Major cloud providers, or hyperscalers, are positioned to capture sustained growth as AI adoption deepens. This includes increasing demand driven by “agentic AI,” where autonomous software systems require continuous, large-scale backend infrastructure to operate effectively.
Within the platform layer, Bernstein expects a gradual but steady migration away from legacy on-premise systems toward cloud-based and AI-native databases. While newer, more agile companies may gain share in specific niches, the broader ecosystem is expected to remain resilient rather than being displaced.
The firm emphasizes that generative AI is creating new layers of value rather than eliminating existing ones. Investors, it notes, should focus on companies capable of bridging traditional enterprise software needs with emerging compute-heavy AI infrastructure demands.
Overall, Bernstein concludes that fears of a “death of software” are overstated, with the industry instead entering a phase of structural expansion driven by AI-enabled transformation.
